Baltimore County is the third-largest county in Maryland by land area (it covers 682 square miles, of which 598 square miles are land and 83 square miles -12%, are water. Baltimore County is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area and Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. It is located south of York County, Pennsylvania and north of Anne Arundel County and Howard County. This area has a diversified economy, with a particular emphasis on education, government, and health care. Many homeowners living here commute to work within the Baltimore City–Columbia–Towson parts of Maryland.
